2011 Xmas Lunch Our annual Xmas lunch was held on 14 December, at the home of Marjorie Welby at Stirling. Approximately 35 members and guests attended and enjoyed a sumptuous lunch, and pleasant conversation. Afterwards, certificates were presented to our hard working volunteers, and also our newly qualified tutors, Don and Marjorie. Our Xmas raffle was drawn, with some very nice prizes going to a lucky few. Our thanks to Marjorie for hosting the lunch at her lovely home, and the band of volunteers who provided a memorable meal. Annual General meeting The Annual General meeting was held on Saturday 24th September, 2011. At that meeting, a new management committee was elected. 1.President.............................................Derik Ward 2. Vice president....................................No candidate 3. Secretary...........................................Shona Fennell 4. Treasurer...........................................Donald Wood 5. Committee........................................Stan Gray 6. Committee........................................Barbara Munn Some of the highlights of the year reported in the President's report were: a) the move to SACOSS by the Adelaide branch. This has been very successful and Derik thanked Barbara Munn and Victor Potticary for their efforts in securing the premises. b) the establishment of the Murray Bridge Group. This has been largely due to the efforts of Don Wood who has developed an excellent outreach program( for demonstrations to community groups, schools and nursing home and workforce staff). Adelaide has supported the group with marketing material, tutor support and financial support. c) A new brochure was produced and updated as well as a new information poster. d) The important annual wine fundraiser involving the labelling of over 100 dozen bottles wine was a resounding success, held at Derik Ward's house. All bottles have been sold. e) Pressure on our budget has been greater this year with increased rental cost associated with the move to SACOSS and establishment of the Murray Bridge venue. Can't get to classes during the day?................ Better Hearing Adelaide has now extended Hearing Loss Management and Lip Reading sessions with the addition of an additional class. This will be held every Thursday between 6 and 7.30 p.m., to cater for those who may find attendance difficult during the day.
Saturday 9 April saw Better Hearing Adelaide members, families and friends gather at Derik and Gill's home for the annual wine labelling and lunch function. This is a BHAA tradition of many years' standing, and one of the most popular events on our calendar. The weather was less pleasant than usual, and our "production line" was squeezed into the carport. With many willing hands, the labours were soon completed. We then enjoyed a pleasant lunch and a sampling of the product! This year we were pleased to welcome several members of our newly formed Murray Bridge group (see following story). (From Left: Betty, Michele, Andrew, Don & Margaret) The products of out labelling are available for sale to members and friends at $10 a bottle. If you would like to support our activities, and have some excellent wine at a very reasonable price, why not call Derik on 08 8431 1397 Wines available are: 2007 and 2008 McLaren Vale Shiraz. New Better Hearing Group at Murray Bridge
Don is taking the BHA tutor training course and will be supported by the Adelaide Branch while he qualifies.
He found out about the BHA program very recently due to his interest in bush walking where he met our president, Derik Ward, who told him about the classes held in Adelaide. Immediately Don saw the need to hold similar sessions in Murray Bridge. Don wants to attract hearing impaired people as well as their families and friends, to encourage a wider awareness of communication strategies, including lip reading, among the people of Murray Bridge. Don wants the sessions to be fun as well as learning events. As with the Adelaide group, regular social events will be organised. His enthusiasm and energy certainly augurs well for a successful new branchMeetings are held on first and third Thursdays of each month from 10.00am till 12.00 noon. : See Support for Living with Hearing Loss for details |
